What to Do After a Serious Car Accident in Texas

After a serious car accident in Texas, the most important step is ensuring everyone receives medical attention. Calling 911 allows emergency responders to quickly assess injuries and provide care.

Even when injuries appear minor, it is still important to be evaluated by medical professionals because some conditions, such as internal injuries, head trauma, or spinal strain, may not be immediately noticeable. Getting prompt medical care also helps create a record of injuries related to the crash.

Once the situation is stabilized, law enforcement will usually document the crash and create an official accident report. Officers may collect witness statements, photograph the scene, and record details about the vehicles involved.

In major accidents, investigators may also review roadway conditions, examine vehicle damage, and look at any available surveillance or dash camera footage to determine how the crash occurred.

Additionally, keeping organized records after the crash can be very helpful during this process. Medical records, hospital bills, repair estimates, photographs of the vehicles, and copies of the police report can all provide important information later.

Texas follows a fault-based insurance system, meaning the driver responsible for causing the crash may be held liable for damages.

However, determining fault can sometimes be complicated, especially in major crashes involving multiple vehicles, serious injuries, or conflicting accounts of what occurred.

Insurance companies conduct their own investigations and may contact those involved to request statements or additional documentation.

That’s why many people choose to speak with a lawyer after a serious crash. Legal guidance can help explain how accident claims are handled in Texas, what evidence may be important, and what types of compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost income, and other accident-related losses.
