Dallas, TX (March 2, 2026) — A Dallas Police motorcycle officer was hospitalized on Monday, March 2, after a hit-and-run collision on Interstate 35E.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes of theNorth Stemmons Freeway, near Inwood Road and the Empire Central exit.
According to the Dallas Police Department, the motor officer was traveling northbound when he was struck from behind by a white Cadillac SUV traveling at a high rate of speed.
The impact threw the officer from his motorcycle onto the freeway. In a desperate move to reach safety, the officer ran toward the shoulder just seconds before his downed motorcycle was struck a second time by another vehicle.
The second collision was so forceful that it launched the motorcycle off the elevated freeway and onto the service road below.
The white SUV that caused the initial crash fled the scene immediately. Shortly after, officers located a wrecked Cadillac SUV matching the suspect vehicle's description near the Empire Central exit, but the driver had already fled on foot.
Paramedics transported the officer to Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
An investigation remains ongoing.
Our thoughts remain with the injured officer as they recover from their injuries.
What Are Your Rights After a Hit-and-Run in Dallas
In a hit-and-run case, the legal focus shifts to "vicarious liability" and the vehicle's owner. In Texas, even if the driver fled, the family or victim can often hold the vehicle owner or the owner’s insurance company responsible for the damages.
The primary step in securing compensation for medical bills and long-term recovery is to identify the vehicle's owner.
Another important step is to secure the police department's accident report. In a hit-and-run case, the report will contain more than just a crash diagram; it will include the VIN and license plate information of the runaway driver.
Under Texas law, if the owner of the vehicle allowed an unlicensed or reckless driver to use the car, they can be held liable under a theory called "Negligent Entrustment."
This report serves as the legal link between the hit-and-run vehicle and the insurance coverage needed to pay for the officer's hospital stay and rehabilitation.
Economic damages in a freeway crash are substantial. These include the specialized trauma care at the hospital, emergency surgery if required, and the cost of the destroyed department motorcycle.
When the injured victims is out of work during their recovery, economic damages also cover lost wages and loss of earning capacity.
Non-economic damages account for the "human cost" of the trauma. Being hit by another driver and then having to run for your life while other cars strike your wreckage can be a very traumatic event.
These damages cover physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, and disfigurement.
